Zcash funding debate grows as proposals target block reward allocations

A Bankless discussion has put renewed focus on Zcash’s development funding model, arguing that the network’s grant pool has grown far beyond current spending needs. The report estimates the net size of the Zcash development funding program at about $125 million, a figure that has fueled debate over whether the existing structure should continue unchanged. Zcash co-founder and current Tachyon head Sean Bowe has already put forward a draft proposal that would end the 8% block reward allocation currently directed to ZCG in a future network upgrade. That proposal is now part of a broader community debate over how development funding should work going forward. According to the discussion, four proposals are now circulating in the community. They range from ending allocations to ZCG, to removing the broader development fund mechanism altogether, or gradually reducing the allocation rate to zero over time. Supporters of reform argue that the current setup allows funds to keep accumulating as ZEC rises while remaining outside direct tokenholder control. Opponents say cutting funding without a replacement could hurt future protocol development and maintenance. None of the proposals has been finalized.

Grayscale says Zcash turns 10 as developer funding model supports protocol upgrades

Asset manager Grayscale said in a report that privacy cryptocurrency Zcash is marking its 10th anniversary this week. The report said Zcash’s ability to keep innovating is due in part to its practice of directing 20% of block rewards to developer funding. It also outlined the protocol’s progression from the Sprout pool to Sapling and Orchard. According to Grayscale, the Ironwood pool, launched in 2026, added quantum-resistant addresses and formal verification to address code vulnerabilities. Grayscale also said it hopes and expects Zcash to keep expanding transaction capacity while preparing for the post-quantum era and AI-driven cybersecurity risks, a process that may require continued funding from multiple parties and efficient capital allocation.

Filecoin Plans to Redirect Block Rewards Toward Paid Storage

Filecoin is preparing a change to how block rewards are distributed under FIP-0118, according to TheDefiant. The proposal would reduce the consensus portion of each block reward from 95% over roughly nine quarters until it reaches a 50% floor. Any part of the service share that is not earned would be burned. The reported change points to a reward model that gives more weight to paid storage services rather than leaving the current allocation unchanged. TheDefiant’s summary did not include additional rollout details, implementation timing beyond the nine-quarter adjustment window, or other operational parameters. Still, the proposal outlines a clear shift in incentive design inside the Filecoin network, with the balance of block rewards moving away from the current consensus-heavy split and toward storage-related service activity.

About 523,000 ETH tied to voluntary validator exits as MetaMask incident points to altered reward address

Monitoring data cited by Kaden suggests the earlier security incident involving MetaMask validators may be linked to a change in the block reward recipient address. According to Kaden, 19 MetaMask validators received block rewards, but rewards from 18 of them were not sent to the correct fee recipient address. Instead, the funds were routed to an address identified as being funded by Tornado Cash, listed as 0x98B9...24A3. Kaden said the attacker appears to have stolen about 0.36 ETH in rewards. At this stage, Kaden said there is no sign that the attacker had the ability to withdraw staked ETH. Separate data also shows that about 17,000 validators have voluntarily exited, involving roughly 523,000 ETH. Kaden added that it remains unclear whether the attacker was able to modify all fee recipient addresses. The report focuses on the reward flow tied to validators and does not state that staked principal was extracted.

Filecoin Says FIL New Supply Could Fall 75% After October Vesting Ends

Filecoin said the amount of newly added FIL supply is expected to drop by 75% once the vesting tied to Protocol Labs and the Filecoin Foundation ends in October this year. According to the project, that change would leave block rewards as the only source of new token issuance going forward. Filecoin also said the path of supply after that point will depend on token burns and FIL locked in staking. The statement was cited by ChainCatcher in a brief report published on Sept. 15, 2026. No additional figures or timeline details beyond the October reference were provided in the source note.

Fractal Bitcoin hits first halving at block 2,100,000 as FIP-102 goes live

Fractal Bitcoin said in its latest post that the network completed its first halving at block height 2,100,000, with proposal FIP-102 activated at the same time. The team said network nodes and indexing services remained stable after the halving. Under FIP-102, FB distribution will expand beyond the Fractal network to the Bitcoin mainnet, opening a direct path for a broader group of Bitcoin users to obtain FB. After activation, the effective block reward on the Fractal side has been reduced to 6.25 FB, while another 6.25 FB issuance budget will be redirected to the Bitcoin mainnet. The project said the change does not increase FB’s total supply. On the Fractal side, merged mining, permissionless mining, and index mining will continue to split block rewards on a 1:1:1 basis. Fractal Bitcoin added that the detailed distribution mechanism for the Bitcoin mainnet will be defined in a later proposal, FIP-103, with a target launch in the first quarter of 2027.

Flop yellow paper outlines 2.48346 billion FLOP genesis supply and five halvings over 10 years

Arthur Hayes shared the Flop Network yellow paper, labeled v0.5.0 draft, with some sections still marked as planned. The document says FLOP will launch with a genesis supply of 2.48346 billion tokens, all allocated to miners, validators, and Agent airdrops, with no VC presale or auction. Block rewards start at 96 FLOP per block and halve every 730 days through a sequence of 96, 48, 24, 12, 6, and 3, for five halvings over 10 years, after which issuance stays fixed at 3 FLOP per block. Reward distribution is set at 75% for miners, 10% for validators, 10% for Agents, and 5% for stakers, although the detailed allocation rules for the Agent and staking pools have not yet been set. The paper also says Flop Labs and the foundation will each receive a separate subsidy of 8 FLOP per block, declining on the same halving schedule and reaching zero after the fifth halving, with about 1.955 billion FLOP distributed over 10 years. On the technical side, the network uses BABE for block production, AlephBFT for finality, and a four-layer PoUI verification stack.

Bitcoin miner capitulation deepens as listed mining stocks break away from BTC

Bitcoin’s mining sector is showing one of the longest miner capitulation signals in the asset’s history, even as listed mining companies post unusually strong stock performance. According to an article by Matt Crosby, translated by Baihua Blockchain and published by PANews, the network hash rate has been falling for 287 straight days and miner difficulty is now 19.9% below its peak, the third-deepest pullback since ASIC machines replaced GPUs as the dominant mining hardware. The split is unusual. Over the past year, BTC has fallen about 46%, while several large publicly traded miners have rallied sharply, with the best-performing name up more than 430%. The article argues that the driver behind that divergence is the AI trade, as investor interest in artificial intelligence has lifted parts of the mining-equity complex even while Bitcoin weakened. At the same time, miners’ economics have deteriorated. Block reward income measured in BTC has hit a record daily low, while the Puell Multiple sits near 0.75, implying miner revenue is around three-quarters of its one-year average. Daily miner revenue is estimated at roughly $30 million, versus a longer-term average near $40 million. Transaction fees remain too small to fill the gap: miners are collecting only about $200,000 per day in fees, and the 28-day average fee revenue still does not cover even one block subsidy.
